The botanical name of Shea Butter is Vitellaria Paradoxa. Shea butter is Creamy colour fat that is extracted from the nut of the African Shea tree. It is a triglyceride derived from stearic acid and oleic acid. Unrefined Shea butter contains a thick and nutty aroma.
Many cosmetic companies use bleach, chemicals, and deodorizers to change their scent and appearance, but often this method negates the healing and medicinal properties of this butter. So, it should always be bought in its raw and unrefined form.
It has a low level of UV protection, with SPF 6, so, it can be used in sunscreen recipes to produce highly effective and nourishing sunscreens.
